Rep. Abdulmumin Jibrin, representing Kiru and Bebeji Constituency in Kano State, has officially returned to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and announced his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
In a statement released on Monday, Jibrin formally renounced his membership in the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the Kwankwasiyya Movement, led by former Kano State Governor Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso. The announcement marks a significant political realignment in Kano State, a region considered strategically important in national elections.
Jibrin was warmly received by thousands of his constituents in his hometown of Kofa, Bebeji Local Government Area, during a public event where he declared his renewed allegiance to the APC. Over 2,000 Islamic clerics (Ulamas) offered special prayers for President Tinubu, for peace and development in Kano State, and for the nation as a whole. The event drew widespread attention and highlighted Jibrin’s strong grassroots support.
The lawmaker’s return to the APC comes two months after his expulsion from the NNPP over alleged anti-party activities and non-payment of membership dues. Despite his departure, Jibrin expressed gratitude to the NNPP for their support during his time in the party. He encouraged his followers to join him in his political journey with the APC, emphasizing unity, development, and the advancement of national interests.
Political analysts have described Jibrin’s return as a strategic boost for the APC ahead of the 2027 elections. His influence in the Kiru and Bebeji constituencies, along with his considerable following across Kano State, is expected to enhance the party’s electoral prospects and consolidate support for Tinubu. Observers note that the public display of prayers and backing from Islamic clerics further reinforces the political weight of his defection.
Jibrin’s move also reflects the fluid dynamics of Nigerian politics, where defections, party switches, and alliances frequently shape election outcomes. Analysts argue that high-profile returns such as Jibrin’s are part of broader strategies by major parties to strengthen grassroots networks, attract influential figures, and project unity ahead of national campaigns.
In his remarks, Jibrin stated that the decision to return to the APC was motivated by his commitment to contributing to Nigeria’s development and ensuring political stability. He called on political actors to focus on constructive engagement and support initiatives aimed at improving governance and social welfare.
As the 2027 elections approach, Jibrin’s return is likely to influence political alignments not only in Kano State but also across northern Nigeria, where party loyalty and local influence remain critical determinants of electoral outcomes. The move underscores the importance of strategic partnerships and the role of prominent politicians in shaping national political narratives.
