Ikeja Electric Plc, in collaboration with the Licensed Electrical Contractors Association of Nigeria (LECAN), has trained over 100 young electricians and field technicians on electrical safety, risk management, and industry best practices. The initiative is part of the company’s broader commitment to promoting professionalism, technical excellence, and safety awareness within Nigeria’s power sector.
The one-day training programme, themed “Electrical Safety and Best Practices in the Electricity Industry,” was held in Lagos on Tuesday. It featured a mix of practical and theoretical sessions designed to enhance the competence of young professionals in areas such as electrical installation standards, alternative power integration, and emerging technologies in energy distribution.
Speaking at the event, the Lagos State Chairman of LECAN, Bada Waheed, highlighted the importance of continuous training and collaboration between utility companies and professional associations. He emphasized that initiatives like this play a vital role in equipping young electricians with the knowledge and technical skills required to maintain safety and efficiency in the industry.
“Our young electricians represent the next generation of Nigeria’s energy workforce,” Waheed said. “Through programmes like this, we are ensuring that they are not only well-trained but also safety-conscious. This kind of collaboration bridges the gap between theoretical classroom knowledge and the practical realities of fieldwork.”
He added that the training underscores a shared commitment to developing a skilled and responsible workforce capable of meeting the growing demands of Nigeria’s electricity sector.
Also speaking, Ikeja Electric’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Kingsley Okotie, explained that the programme stemmed from the company’s desire to address knowledge and safety gaps observed among technicians operating in the field. According to him, the training reinforces Ikeja Electric’s “zero-harm” culture,an internal policy that prioritizes the safety of both employees and customers.
“Electricity is an essential but powerful resource that requires precision, responsibility, and adherence to safety standards,” Okotie stated. “This initiative is designed to empower participants with the right knowledge and tools to carry out their duties safely and efficiently. By doing so, we are not just improving technical competence but also contributing to the creation of safer communities.”
He further noted that the partnership with LECAN reflects Ikeja Electric’s long-term vision of fostering collaboration with key industry stakeholders to reduce electrical hazards and workplace accidents within its operational network.
Participants at the training expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn directly from industry experts. One of them, Makinde Adeyinka, described the experience as “eye-opening,” adding that it deepened his understanding of safety standards, proper electrical installations, and the importance of adhering to regulatory procedures.
The initiative forms part of Ikeja Electric’s broader corporate social responsibility and youth empowerment agenda. Beyond improving technical skills, the company aims to nurture a new generation of professionals who are safety-driven and well-prepared to contribute to Nigeria’s evolving energy landscape.
By investing in human capital development and promoting best practices, Ikeja Electric continues to demonstrate leadership in advancing safety, professionalism, and innovation in the Nigerian electricity industry.
