PDP Chairman Urges Credible Polls, Weighs Jonathan and Obi

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State, Chief Masha, has called for credible elections and stronger democratic institutions as Nigeria looks ahead to its political future.

Speaking during a live interview on Landslide News on Tuesday, October 1, 2025, Chief Masha described Nigeria’s democracy as stagnated and urged reforms that would restore public trust and ensure that citizens’ votes truly count.

Reflecting on the contributions of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Masha praised him as a leader with a proven track record in promoting peace and stability, even in difficult times. He noted that Jonathan remains highly respected both nationally and internationally, making his rumored interest in returning to the presidency a significant development.
“If Jonathan returns to the race, it will be difficult for any contender to match his record of experience and service,” Masha said.

The PDP chairman also acknowledged the growing popularity of Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State, describing him as a reform-minded politician with a reputation for accountability, integrity, and prudent financial management. According to him, Obi’s appeal resonates strongly with young Nigerians who see him as a symbol of good governance.
“Obi commands a lot of support,” he added, noting that his cross-regional popularity could make him a formidable contender.

Political commentator, Mr. Kingsley Okafor, who joined the program, echoed similar sentiments. He suggested that Jonathan and Obi are the two strongest options PDP may seriously consider for the 2027 presidential race. According to him, the party faces a choice between returning to a seasoned former president with global recognition or embracing a younger leader with fresh ideas and grassroots momentum.

Chief Masha, however, refrained from endorsing either candidate. Instead, he stressed the importance of internal democracy within the PDP and urged party members to allow a transparent and competitive process.
“I cannot speak for or against either man,” he said. “Let the best candidate emerge. If it is Jonathan, let him carry the flag; if it is Obi, then let us rally behind him. What matters most is that PDP puts forward someone who can deliver real progress for Nigeria.”

The discussion also touched on the political influence of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai. While his current political alignment remains unclear, Okafor suggested that El-Rufai could play a pivotal role in shaping alliances ahead of 2027, given his experience, networks, and controversial yet influential presence.

As the PDP prepares for critical decisions in the months ahead, Chief Masha’s remarks highlight the party’s delicate balance between continuity and change. With Jonathan’s legacy on one side and Obi’s reformist appeal on the other, the coming contest is expected to test not only the unity of the party but also Nigerians’ appetite for leadership capable of moving the nation beyond its present challenges.
