The average cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, dropped significantly to N11,875 in August 2025. This represents a 17.4% decrease compared to the N14,375 recorded in July.
On a year-on-year basis, the price declined by 16.7%, down from N14,261.57 recorded in August 2024.
Despite the overall drop, retail prices vary across locations. Vanguard’s market checks revealed that 1kg of cooking gascurrently sells for between N950 and N1,020, depending on the area.
However, figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) present a different trend for the previous month. According to the NBS LPG Price Watch Report for July 2025, the average cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder fell by 1.91% to N20,609.48, down from N21,010.56 in June.

The decline in prices is a welcome relief to many households facing high living costs amid Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges.
