The Abia State Government has launched a comprehensive induction and training programme for 5,349 newly recruited teachers, marking a significant step in its educational reform agenda.
Governor Alex Otti, through a statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Basic and Secondary Education, Kenechukwu Nwosu, announced that the training commenced in Umuahia and Aba, covering early childhood, primary, and secondary education levels.
The initiative, coordinated by the Education Reform Implementation Team, is supported by Lead Master Trainers previously groomed under the AbiaFIRST initiative.
The statement emphasized that this recruitment drive responds to UNESCO’s global projection that over 44 million additional teachers will be needed by 2030 to meet Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) on quality education. Of this figure, Sub-Saharan Africa is expected to require 15 million teachers.
“While many regions grapple with teacher shortages, Abia State is proactively addressing the crisis by hiring, training, and retaining qualified educators,” the statement noted.
Over 30,000 applications were received during the recruitment exercise earlier in the year, with 5,349 teachers selected purely on merit making it the most competitive and transparent teacher recruitment in Abia’s history.
The 12-day induction programme includes bilingual instruction, classroom management, inquiry-based and project-based learning, technical education, and modern ICT modules such as robotics, artificial intelligence, and green energy integration.
Nwosu reaffirmed Governor Otti’s commitment to teacher welfare, highlighting the consistent payment of salaries by the 28th of every month—a departure from the inconsistencies of past administrations.
This induction forms part of the broader AbiaFIRST Education Programme, which includes:Free and compulsory education from Primary 1 to JSS3,Recruitment of high-quality teaching professionals,Ongoing professional development, Upgrading of school infrastructure
“With the deployment of these newly trained teachers, Abia State anticipates a significant boost in learning outcomes and educational standards across the board,” the statement concluded.
