The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has reiterated the Nigerian Army’s commitment to building a well-educated, professionally competent, and future-ready force through sustained investment in education and training.
Speaking at the 67th Passing Out Parade of the Nigerian Military School (NMS) in Zaria, Kaduna State, on Saturday, Oluyede emphasized the Army’s ongoing efforts to support soldiers’ academic growth. He was represented at the event by the General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Maj.-Gen. Mayirenso Saraso.
“We are sponsoring soldiers to further their studies in reputable universities across the country. Former NMS boys are among the top beneficiaries of this initiative,” Oluyede said.
He encouraged the graduating students to embrace excellence and selfless service, noting that they are now formally part of the Nigerian Army, having voluntarily signed up to serve the nation.
The COAS acknowledged there would be challenges ahead, but assured them they had received adequate training to thrive as junior leaders in the military.
Oluyede also urged interested graduates to consider enrolling at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), adding that while the application process is open to all Nigerians, NMS graduates enjoy an edge due to their military background.
“Take advantage of the welfare and career development initiatives available to you as you progress in the Army,” he advised.
He reaffirmed his leadership philosophy, which focuses on readiness, operational effectiveness, sound administration, and stakeholder cooperation, with a strong emphasis on soldier welfare.
“Central to this philosophy is the ‘Soldier First’ concept, placing the welfare and morale of personnel at the core of every decision we take,” he said.
The event was attended by high-profile guests, including the Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Maj.-Gen. Abdul-Khalifa Ibrahim, alongside traditional and religious leaders.
