On Saturday, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma formally presented certificates and staffs of office to 66 newly appointed traditional rulers in the state. The ceremony took place at the Government House in Owerri.
In his address, Governor Uzodimma urged the new traditional rulers to lead with integrity and treat their subjects in a way that honors God. He emphasized the importance of fairness, peace, and justice, advising them not to view their communities as subservient but to exemplify these virtues in their leadership.
The governor also stressed that traditional rulers should not govern from abroad, warning that any ruler found neglecting their duties would have their staff of office revoked. He called on the new leaders to view themselves as integral parts of the government, serving as ambassadors in their communities.
“You are here to support local government chairmen and councilors to ensure law and order are maintained in your areas,” Uzodimma stated. He further underscored their critical role in securing their communities, asserting that any traditional ruler involved in fostering insecurity would be dethroned.
“If you are unable to maintain security in your community, we will replace you,” the governor declared. “Establish vigilance groups and work with the youth to safeguard your communities.”
Uzodimma urged the new rulers to cooperate with his administration and resist being used by anyone to undermine or challenge the government. He made it clear that those with grievances against the government should confront it directly.
Pledging the support of his administration, the governor congratulated the new traditional rulers and prayed for wisdom to guide their leadership.
Speaking on behalf of the newly appointed royal fathers, the Traditional Ruler of Umuezeala/Umueme in Oru East Local Government Area, Prof. Peter Nnabuo, assured the governor of their commitment to restoring peace and stability in their communities.
In a brief interview, Eze Okwudili Nwandu, the Traditional Ruler of Ihite-afoukwu Ancient Kingdom in Ahiazu Mbaise LGA, expressed his gratitude for the honor of his appointment, pledging to serve his people and ensure they benefit from his leadership.
The Traditional Ruler of Amato Autonomous Community in Obowo, Eze Michael Obioma, also thanked the governor, expressing his commitment to enhancing security and promoting peace within his community.
