Imo Labour Party Crisis: Committee Members Reject Suspension by Chairman

The Labour Party in Imo State is embroiled in a crisis, as members of the State Working Committee (SWC) have rejected their suspension by the party’s chairman, Callistus Ihejiagwa. The suspension was announced on Saturday, but the SWC members insist that it’s an attempt to silence opposition within the party.

According to Emeka Ihejirika, the party’s legal adviser, Ihejiagwa’s actions are a distraction from the serious allegations leveled against him. Thirteen members of the SWC had passed a Vote of No Confidence on Ihejiagwa, citing high-handed leadership, financial mismanagement, unconstitutional actions, and betrayal of the party.

Ihejirika accused Ihejiagwa of running the party like a personal empire, sidelining key officials, and making unilateral decisions without consultation. He also alleged that Ihejiagwa has refused to account for party funds and has engaged in financial mismanagement.

The SWC members have urged Ihejiagwa to address the allegations and avoid suspending members to silence opposition. They also called for a thorough review of Ihejiagwa’s actions and financial dealings, stating that his leadership has become detrimental to the party’s growth in Imo.

LP stakeholders from Owerri Zone have condemned Ihejiagwa’s actions, describing them as an abuse of power and a threat to the integrity of the party. Notable leaders, including Mr. Mathew Nwogu and Mr. Clinton Amadi, have expressed outrage over Ihejiagwa’s leadership style, anti-party activities, and lack of financial transparency.

The crisis in the Labour Party in Imo State has raised concerns about the party’s internal democracy and governance. The SWC members’ rejection of their suspension is a clear indication that they will not go down without a fight. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the party’s national leadership will intervene to resolve the crisis.
