Nigeria’s electoral commission is preparing to engage political parties, journalists and other major players in the electoral process as the 2027 general elections draw closer.
The Independent National Electoral Commission will host a media briefing and a broad stakeholders’ forum in Abuja on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, as part of activities marking 100 days to the elections.
The gathering is expected to shed light on the commission’s progress so far and the outstanding tasks ahead of the polls. Matters relating to voter registration records, political party candidates, election materials and security arrangements are among the issues expected to be discussed.
INEC disclosed this in a statement released on Sunday by Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the commission’s chairman.
The statement said the engagement was also aimed at improving interaction between the commission and organisations involved in the conduct and monitoring of the elections.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will hold a World Press Conference and National Stakeholders’ Meeting on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, to mark 100 days to the 2027 General Election.
“The Commission will provide updates on preparations for the elections, including the voters’ register, candidate nominations, logistics and critical measures to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.”
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, is expected to speak at the programme, which will also feature contributions from other important participants in the electoral process.
The commission explained that bringing the various groups together was part of its effort to maintain openness and ensure regular communication as the election date approaches.
“The event will be addressed by INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, alongside other key stakeholders involved in the electoral process. The national stakeholders’ meeting underlines the Commission’s commitment to absolute transparency, proactive public communication, and collaborative engagement with key actors in the electoral ecosystem,” the statement continued.
Representatives of political parties and security bodies serving under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security are expected at the forum.
Diplomatic missions, development organisations, civil society groups, election observers, disability rights organisations, traditional and religious institutions, youth groups and senior media representatives are also listed among the expected participants.
The engagement comes at a time when preparations for the next general elections are gathering pace.
INEC’s approved schedule places the presidential and National Assembly contests on February 20, 2027. The governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will follow on March 6.
Ahead of those dates, political parties are expected to complete their primaries and submit the names of their flag bearers, alongside other activities required under the electoral timetable.
Amupitan assumed leadership of the electoral commission in October 2025 and has pledged to pursue elections that meet the standards of fairness, credibility, openness and inclusiveness.
Tuesday’s programme is therefore expected to provide an avenue for INEC to explain its preparations while allowing key participants to engage the commission ahead of the elections.
The meeting will be held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, beginning at 10am.
INEC stated that only invited participants would be admitted. Journalists granted accreditation and other invited guests will also have to show their invitation cards or accreditation badges before gaining access through security checkpoints.
Members of the public who are unable to attend will still be able to follow the proceedings, as the commission said the event would be aired on major national television stations and streamed through its official social media channels.
