2027: AAC Demands EFCC Oversight of Oyo Government Spending

The Oyo State chapter of the African Action Congress (AAC) has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to scrutinise the state government’s expenditure ahead of the 2027 elections.

The party made the demand in a petition to the anti-graft agency, requesting closer monitoring of financial transactions by the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde.

According to the AAC, its request is intended to ensure that public funds are not diverted or misused for political purposes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party reportedly urged the EFCC to examine government spending and strengthen oversight of financial activities within the state.

The AAC expressed concern about what it described as the possibility of public resources being used to influence the electoral process or provide an unfair advantage to political interests.

It therefore asked the commission to pay particular attention to government expenditure during the period leading to the elections.

The party’s position comes amid increasing political activity in Oyo State, where parties and prospective candidates are beginning to position themselves ahead of the 2027 governorship contest.

Governor Makinde, who is serving his second term, remains a major political figure in the state and has also emerged as one of the prominent opposition figures being discussed nationally ahead of the next presidential election.

The AAC’s demand places government expenditure under renewed political scrutiny as parties prepare for the electoral cycle.

The party argued that transparency in the management of public resources is essential to maintaining public confidence in the democratic process.

It also called for relevant financial authorities to ensure that government spending is properly documented and subjected to appropriate oversight.

The request to the EFCC is expected to generate further political debate in the state, particularly as competing parties increasingly focus on the performance and spending record of the Makinde administration.

The Oyo Government has previously highlighted infrastructure development, road projects, healthcare, education and other programmes as major areas of its administration’s activities.

However, opposition parties have continued to scrutinise the government’s policies and expenditure, particularly as the 2027 elections approach.

The AAC maintained that its request was aimed at protecting public resources and ensuring that state funds are deployed for their intended purposes.

The party’s intervention also reflects broader concerns in Nigerian politics about the relationship between public spending and electoral campaigns.

Under Nigeria’s electoral framework, the use of public resources for partisan political purposes remains a significant issue, with political parties frequently calling for greater transparency and accountability during election periods.

The EFCC has not, in the report reviewed, indicated whether it would act on the AAC’s petition or commence any investigation into the Oyo State Government.

The development comes as political parties across the country intensify preparations for the 2027 elections, with issues of governance, accountability and the use of public resources expected to feature prominently in political campaigns.

For the AAC, increased oversight of government expenditure would help ensure that the electoral contest is conducted on a more transparent and level playing field.
