Pat Utomi Says 50-Year Rivalry With Galadima Shows Unity Is Possible In NDC

Former presidential candidate and political economist, Professor Pat Utomi, has said his five-decade political rivalry with veteran politician Buba Galadima demonstrates that differences in politics do not have to prevent reconciliation and friendship. He made the remark during the inauguration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) National Reconciliation Committee in Abuja.

Utomi, who chairs the reconciliation committee, described the assignment as both a privilege and a significant responsibility. He expressed confidence that the committee would be able to reconcile aggrieved members and strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on his relationship with Galadima, Utomi noted that despite their political disagreements spanning about 50 years, they have remained close friends. According to him, their relationship serves as proof that party members with differing views can also come together in the interest of unity.

Utomi also said the NDC is focused on building a future-oriented political platform that prioritises young Nigerians. He stressed the importance of setting aside personal grievances to develop policies capable of addressing the aspirations of the country’s youthful population.

Galadima, who serves as co-chairman of the reconciliation committee, acknowledged that the task of resolving disputes within the party would be challenging. However, he expressed optimism that the committee would succeed in restoring confidence and unity among members before the 2027 elections.

The reconciliation committee was established to address grievances arising from the party’s congresses, convention and primary elections, with the goal of strengthening the NDC ahead of the next general elections. Political observers say the committee’s success could play a significant role in shaping the party’s preparedness for the 2027 polls.
