Afrobeats star David Adeleke, better known as Davido, has said he may seek the intervention of United States President Donald Trump if the forthcoming Osun State governorship election is marred by irregularities.
The singer made the statement while speaking during a live social media session with comedian Carter Efe, as political activities intensify ahead of the August 15 governorship poll.
Davido’s comments come as his uncle and incumbent Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, prepares to contest for another term in office. The musician has openly supported the governor’s re-election bid and has taken an active role in mobilising young people for the campaign.
The singer stressed that the election must be conducted in a peaceful, transparent and credible manner. He also indicated that he would speak out if he believed the process had been manipulated or compromised.
Davido further suggested that any suspected electoral misconduct would not be ignored, saying he would be prepared to attract international attention to developments surrounding the election.
In a remark during the live broadcast, the singer said he would involve Trump if anything went wrong during the Osun election.
His statement has generated attention because of the increasingly competitive political atmosphere surrounding the election, with various political actors and supporters campaigning aggressively ahead of the vote.
The singer has previously used his public platform to encourage young Nigerians to participate in the democratic process and demand accountability from political leaders.
Meanwhile, an aide to Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, Ambrose Nwaogwugwu, has reacted to Davido’s warning concerning an alleged plan by an unnamed politician from Imo State to influence the Osun election.
Davido had earlier appealed to the unidentified politician to allow the election to take place without interference. According to the singer, the individual was allegedly interested in turning the Osun poll into an opportunity to display political strength.
Although Davido did not identify the person he was referring to, his remarks drew a response from Nwaogwugwu, who serves as the Senior Special Assistant to the Imo State Governor on Electronic and Creative Media.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Nwaogwugwu argued that Davido’s appeal was directed at the wrong person. He said the singer should instead address the people of Osun State, who would ultimately decide the winner through their votes.
The governor’s aide also questioned why Davido would direct such an appeal toward Uzodimma, noting that the singer’s family ties to Imo State did not establish any basis for assuming that the governor would interfere in the Osun election.
Nwaogwugwu described Davido’s comments as inappropriate and maintained that Governor Uzodimma has consistently supported peaceful elections and the need for voters to freely determine their political representatives.
The exchange comes as political parties and their supporters step up preparations for the Osun governorship contest. With the election drawing closer, calls for security, transparency and respect for the will of voters have continued to dominate public discussions.
Davido’s intervention adds another layer to the ongoing political conversation, particularly because of his large following and influence among young Nigerians.
The singer has maintained that his involvement is aimed at supporting a credible electoral process and ensuring that the people of Osun State are allowed to freely choose their governor.
