A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Faizu Alfindiki, has claimed that many people in Northern Nigeria are surprised by the growing political alliance between Rabiu Kwankwaso and Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Alfindiki stated that the reported alliance between both politicians has continued to generate reactions across the North, especially among supporters and political stakeholders closely monitoring developments ahead of the next election cycle. According to him, many northerners did not expect Kwankwaso and Obi to work together politically because of their different political backgrounds and regional support bases.
The APC chieftain also criticised some northern political figures and groups allegedly supporting the emerging alliance, arguing that such political arrangements could alter existing political calculations in the region. He noted that ongoing consultations among opposition figures are already attracting nationwide attention as politicians begin early preparations for 2027.
Recent political discussions involving Kwankwaso and Obi have fueled speculations about possible coalition efforts aimed at challenging the ruling APC in the next presidential election. Both politicians were major contenders in the 2023 elections and continue to maintain strong support bases, particularly among youths and voters in different parts of the country.
Political analysts believe that any alliance involving Kwankwaso and Obi could significantly influence Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of 2027. Observers say such a partnership may attract considerable attention because of the political influence both men command in their respective regions.
However, critics argue that building a broad opposition coalition in Nigeria often comes with challenges, including internal disagreements, regional interests, and leadership struggles. Similar coalition efforts in the past have faced difficulties in sustaining unity among political actors with varying ambitions and support structures.
Despite growing speculation, neither Kwankwaso nor Obi has officially confirmed the full details of any long-term political arrangement ahead of the 2027 elections. Nevertheless, ongoing meetings and consultations among opposition figures continue to fuel political discussions across the country.
As political activities gradually intensify nationwide, alliances, consultations, and strategic negotiations are expected to remain central to conversations leading up to the next general elections.
