The Ogun State Government has once again expressed its commitment to hosting athletes, sports lovers, partners, and supporters at the fourth edition of the Ogun Women Run, a 5-kilometre race designed to promote women’s participation in sports. The event is set to hold on Saturday, April 11, in Abeokuta.
This commitment was made known by the Commissioner for Sports Development, Wasiu Isiaka, during a courtesy visit by the race organisers to his office.
Speaking during the visit, the Managing Director of Brussel Sports Management Limited, Mrs Yetunde Johnson, thanked the Ogun State Government for its continuous support and for providing a favourable atmosphere that has helped sports initiatives thrive. She noted that the government’s backing played a major role in the success recorded in the previous three editions of the race.
She stated that the organisers remain thankful for the consistent encouragement the event has received since it started, adding that the state’s dedication to sports growth has helped the race gain more recognition each year. She also expressed optimism that the collaboration would make the fourth edition bigger and more successful.
In his remarks, the commissioner praised the organisers for their commitment and foresight in sustaining an initiative that focuses on empowering women through sports. He described the race as an important platform that not only encourages women to stay active but also promotes healthy living.
Isiaka also pointed out that Ogun State is gradually establishing itself as a preferred destination for major sporting competitions. He cited events such as the National Sports Festival, the CAA U-18 and U-20 Championships, and the West Africa Para Games as examples of the government’s deliberate efforts to strengthen the state’s position in the sports sector both nationally and internationally.
He added that the state government remains willing to support programmes that will advance sports development and open up opportunities for residents. According to him, initiatives like the Ogun Women Run support the government’s goal of using sports to empower people, promote unity, and improve public health.
Meanwhile, the organisers have promised that this year’s race will be better than previous editions in terms of planning, turnout, and overall experience. They assured participants and supporters that the event will deliver a more engaging and rewarding experience for women in Ogun State and other parts of the country.
