Makinde Reaffirms Loyalty to PDP, Rules Out Defection Ahead of 2027 Elections

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has dismissed speculations about a possible defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reaffirming his loyalty to the party.

Makinde made this declaration on Monday while addressing PDP stakeholders from all 33 Local Government Areas at the Local Government House Secretariat in Ibadan. His comments come shortly after he attended a political meeting in Kano hosted by Rabiu Kwankwaso, which was also attended by Peter Obi and Seriake Dickson.

Reassuring party members, the governor emphasized that the PDP remains strong and will actively participate in the 2027 general elections.

“Those saying PDP will die are mistaken. The party will be on the ballot in 2027, and we will present candidates for all elective positions from the state to the national level. We will remain in PDP and win,” he said.

Makinde urged party leaders and stakeholders to set aside internal differences and work together ahead of the elections. He stressed the importance of unity in safeguarding the party’s position in Oyo State.

“They want to take Oyo State at all costs, but it is our responsibility to ensure we adjust where necessary to accommodate one another,” he added.

As part of preparations, the governor directed party leaders across various zones to hold meetings aimed at strengthening unity and building consensus.

He also announced automatic tickets for members of the National Assembly and first-term members of the Oyo State House of Assembly. According to him, first-term state lawmakers will be guaranteed tickets, while decisions regarding returning members will take into account existing agreements, including rotational arrangements.

“There are instances where individuals have chosen not to return, and in some cases, second-term lawmakers may seek a third term. We are preparing for a tough electoral contest, but we are confident of victory,” he said.

Describing the 2027 elections as pivotal, Makinde noted that the stakes go beyond politics.

“This is not just about 2027; it is about the future of democracy and generations to come. Nothing worthwhile comes easy success requires effort and resilience. Can we push through? Yes. Can we win? Absolutely,” he stated.

At the meeting, the governor reaffirmed that all aspirants seeking elective positions in 2027 would contest under the PDP. He added that the party intends to adopt a consensus-based approach in selecting candidates, emphasizing that unity and internal cohesion are critical to maintaining its political dominance in Oyo State.
