Atiku, Amaechi, Obi Listed as Top ADC 2027 Contenders

Prominent media personality and politician Dele Momodu has identified former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi as among the leading contenders for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections. His comments reflect the growing interest in opposition political positioning as Nigeria prepares for a highly competitive electoral season.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme, Momodu emphasised that the ADC has attracted heavyweight politicians whose experience and national profiles make them strong potential candidates for the party’s presidential nomination. According to him, Atiku, Amaechi, and Obi each possess unique credentials that could influence the outcome of the 2027 race if they pursue the ADC platform.

Momodu highlighted Atiku Abubakar’s longstanding presence in national politics, noting that his tenure as Nigeria’s vice president and multiple presidential bids have positioned him as a formidable contender. He pointed out that Atiku’s extensive political network and experience could give the ADC an edge in mobilising support across different regions of the country.

Rotimi Amaechi, another leading figure in the potential pool, was described by Momodu as a seasoned administrator who has served in key roles, including as governor, minister, and legislative leader. These roles, he argued, have equipped Amaechi with broad governance experience and appeal among diverse voter groups.

Peter Obi, who joined the ADC after departing the Labour Party, was also named among the front-runners. Obi’s popularity, especially among young voters and urban electorates, has made him a compelling figure in opposition politics. While Momodu stopped short of declaring any formal candidacy, he observed that Obi’s influence cannot be overlooked if he chooses to contest for the ADC ticket.

The discussions around potential candidates come amid broader efforts by the ADC to present itself as a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Momodu urged members of the party to focus on collective goals rather than individual ambitions, emphasising the need for unity in challenging the APC’s hold on power at the national level.

Political analysts say the race for the ADC presidential nomination is likely to be closely watched, as it could shape the opposition’s strategy against the incumbent administration. They note that early positioning by influential figures like Atiku, Amaechi, and Obi reflects the fluid nature of political alliances in Nigeria’s multiparty system, where leaders often shift platforms to maximise their electoral prospects.

Momodu also called on Nigerians and ADC members to rise above personal sentiments and focus on issue-based politics that can foster national unity and effective governance. He argued that a united front will be crucial for converting public dissatisfaction with the status quo into electoral success in 2027.

While none of the names mentioned have formally secured the ADC presidential ticket, their potential candidacies illustrate the party’s growing relevance as a platform for high-profile opposition figures. With consultations and internal deliberations expected to continue, the coming months will be critical as the ADC finalises its approach to the 2027 electoral contest.
