The government has announced that Friday, September 5, 2025, will be a national holiday in honor of Eid-ul-Mawlid, the celebration of Prophet Muhammad’s birth.
This announcement came from the Ministry of Interior, representing the Minister, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. In the message, the government extended warm wishes to Muslims in Nigeria and abroad, encouraging everyone to follow the Prophet’s example of compassion, humility, kindness, and patience.
The statement also urged people of all religions to take the day as an opportunity to pray for peace, stability, and security across the nation, while supporting initiatives that promote unity and national progress.
“The Minister of Interior wishes Muslims a joyous and peaceful Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration.
“The celebration of Eid-ul-Mawlid offers us yet another opportunity to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, promote peaceful coexistence, and imbibe the Prophet’s teachings of mutual respect and selfless service to humanity,” the statement added.
Eid-ul-Mawlid, which falls in the third month of the Islamic calendar (Rabi’ al-Awwal), is usually observed with prayers, religious discussions, processions, and acts of charity.
In Nigeria, it is recognized as a public holiday, reflecting the country’s significant Muslim population and long tradition of celebrating major Islamic festivals.
The holiday also serves as a reminder for leaders and citizens alike to promote harmony, coexistence, and unity, especially as the country faces ongoing security and economic challenges.
