After more than a decade-long pause, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc has officially resumed work on the Abuja Centenary City project, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s urban renewal efforts. The restart follows the signing of a contract for Phase One of the project’s primary infrastructure development.
First launched in 2014, the Abuja Centenary City was envisioned as a modern lifestyle hub that would symbolize Nigeria’s aspirations in the new century. Planned as a world-class mixed-use development, the city is designed to host luxury residences, five-star hotels, an International Commerce Centre, a Convention Centre, the Mall of Africa, and a championship golf course.
Speaking at the contract signing ceremony, the Managing Director of Abuja Centenary City, Dr. Odenigwe Ike Michaels, explained why Julius Berger was selected to execute the road and infrastructure works. According to him, the construction giant’s unmatched reputation for delivering landmark projects across Nigeria made it the natural choice. He challenged the company to not only meet expectations but also exceed its past achievements, stressing that the project represents Abuja’s most ambitious urban renewal initiative to date. He further emphasized that Centenary City is intended to attract foreign investment, boost the local economy, and position Abuja as a global lifestyle destination.
In his remarks, Julius Berger’s Managing Director, Dr. Peer Lubasch, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to contribute to the landmark development. He noted that Centenary City goes beyond a standard urban project, describing it as “an investment in the future of Abuja and the Federal Capital Territory.” He added that the project will serve as a driver for employment, new business opportunities, and foreign investment, while offering leisure, cultural, and commercial facilities of international standards.
Lubasch recalled that Julius Berger’s relationship with the project dates back to its launch in 2014, highlighting the company’s consistent belief in its potential. With the newly signed contract, the first phase of construction will include a 4.31-kilometre international-standard dual carriageway equipped with modern utilities. According to him, the road is more than just infrastructure it will function as the first vital artery of Centenary City, unlocking access to further phases of development and laying the groundwork for long-term growth.
With over six decades of proven expertise in engineering and infrastructure, Julius Berger has earned national trust for its precision, durability, and quality. Lubasch assured stakeholders that the company will bring the same dedication to Centenary City, ensuring the project meets world-class benchmarks.
He concluded by affirming that the new development will inspire confidence among investors and residents alike, as it is built on a solid foundation of quality. “When this road is completed,” he remarked, “it will not just be a passageway, but a symbol of progress and it will make people want to see many more kilometres of Julius Berger roads in this extraordinary city.”
The resumption of the Centenary City project signals renewed momentum in Abuja’s transformation agenda, rekindling hope that the bold vision first unveiled in 2014 will now take firm shape.
