Nigeria’s Maritime Industry Not Meeting Expectations — Clarion Executive

Benedine Eloka serves as the Vice President of Clarion Shipping West Africa Limited, a fully
Nigerian-owned maritime logistics company. With over two decades of industry experience, the firm recently launched its first fully owned container shipping line, the Clarion Dragon Ocean.

In this interview with Anozie Egole, Eloka reflects on the company’s journey so far.
What was your first major breakthrough in the maritime sector, and how did it lead to the
creation of Clarion Shipping West Africa Limited?

Our breakthrough came during a complex project that involved handling and clearing
specialised industrial equipment in Nigeria. Successfully executing that assignment exposed a clear lack of dependable, local shipping solutions. This inspired us to establish Clarion Shipping West Africa Limited with a vision to build a world-class Nigerian maritime logistics brand driven by excellence, integrity, and resilience.

As a CEO, what keeps you motivated daily, and how do you manage the demands of your
role?

What drives me is the impact we’re making creating jobs, promoting indigenous capacity,
and raising standards in the maritime space. Balancing the workload comes from a deep
sense of purpose, discipline, and surrounding myself with a capable, motivated team.

What motivates you daily, and how do you manage your demanding roles?
I’m driven by a strong sense of purpose the desire to build something lasting that will impact future generations. I maintain balance through strategic delegation, disciplined routines, and by working alongside a team of capable, passionate professionals who share our vision.

What leadership values have shaped your journey and your position at Clarion Shipping?
I lead with integrity, courage, and a clear vision. In an unpredictable industry, I’ve learned
that consistency, transparency, and empathy are vital. I also prioritize mentorship and
succession planning, because true leadership lies in empowering others to grow.

What are Clarion Shipping’s core services and areas of operation? Which markets do you
serve regionally and internationally?

Clarion Shipping provides comprehensive maritime logistics solutions, including port-to-port shipping, cargo consolidation, inland transportation, customs clearance, and warehousing.

While Nigeria is our home base, our operations extend across West Africa, with global
connectivity to Europe and Asia through strategic international partnerships.
What sets Clarion Shipping apart from other logistics and shipping companies in West
Africa?

Our uniqueness lies in being fully Nigerian-owned with a global outlook. We combine deep
local expertise with strategic investments such as our newly acquired vessel, Ocean Dragon and technology-driven operations. This enables us to deliver regional reliability while meeting international standards.
