Dangote Cement Plc has introduced a Farmers Empowerment Programme in Benue State
to boost local agriculture and promote food security. The programme aims to assist 50
farmers by equipping them with the necessary resources and support to grow both
subsistence and cash crops on a commercial scale.

According to a statement from the company, the programme aligns with its broader goal of
backing government efforts to improve food production and strengthen economic activity in Benue.

The project also aims to create lasting value in the company’s host communities by
boosting agricultural productivity and encouraging sustainable livelihoods.

Speaking during the launch, Johnson Kor, General Manager, Social Performance, described
the programme as both “historic and innovative.” He emphasized that the farmers were
carefully chosen from six designated communities within Gboko Local Government Area,
where Dangote Cement operates.

The company reiterated its commitment to fostering inclusive development and supporting
local economies through targeted social interventions. This latest move reflects Dangote
Cement’s growing focus on community-based projects that promote self-sufficiency and
long-term growth, especially in regions where it maintains significant business presence.

The programme provides farmers with essential inputs such as fertilisers, agrochemicals,
knapsack sprayers, and a variety of seedlings. According to Munusamy Murugan, Plant
Director at Dangote Cement’s Gboko Plant, the company intends to run the initiative
annually, with room for adjustments based on the needs and preferences of the community.

This initiative comes just weeks after Dangote Cement provided cash grants to
businesswomen in its Gboko host communities and more than doubled bursary payments for students in the area. The company also plans further empowerment programmes, including a Youth Empowerment Programme focused on skills training in welding, fabrication, and solar electrical installation.

Dr. Ahemen Samuel, a consultant with Abbass Corporate Services, encouraged the
beneficiaries to fully embrace the opportunity, emphasizing that the programme has the
potential to transform them into successful agricultural entrepreneurs. He highlighted the
importance of making the most of the support provided to build sustainable livelihoods.

Also speaking, community member Kwaghgba Isaac applauded the initiative, describing it as a landmark intervention that will significantly enhance subsistence farming in the area.

He noted that the programme would not only improve local food production but also contribute meaningfully to the nation’s food security.
