Former Senate President, Senator David Mark, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing worsening internal divisions and unresolved leadership crises within the party.
In a letter dated June 27 and addressed to the PDP Chairman in his Otukpo Ward, Benue State, Mark expressed his disappointment with the current state of the party, describing it as a shadow of its former self and increasingly vulnerable to public ridicule.
Titled “Notice of Resignation from the PDP,” the letter stated:
“I bring warm greetings to you and members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Otukpo Ward 1, and by extension, to the entire Benue State and Nigeria. I write to formally inform you of my decision to resign my membership of the party with immediate effect.”
Mark recalled his long-standing loyalty to the PDP, even after the party’s 2015 loss at the presidential polls when many top members exited. He noted that he remained committed to rebuilding and repositioning the party but said recent developments had made that effort unsustainable.
“Recent events marked by deepening divisions, persistent leadership crisis, and irreconcilable differences have weakened the party beyond recognition,” he wrote.
After consulting with his family, friends, and political associates, Mark said he has decided to join the National Coalition of Political Opposition Movement in Nigeria a new platform he believes can help rescue the country and preserve democratic values.
He has since been named interim National Chairman of the soon-to-be-launched coalition, while former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has been appointed interim National Secretary.
