In a major boost to Nigeria’s cultural heritage, Coronation Group has teamed up with the
National Commission for Museums and Monuments to create a world-class gallery
dedicated to the Benin Bronzes. The collaboration aims to preserve and showcase these
historic artifacts, highlighting their significance and promoting cultural awareness. The
partnership was officially announced in a statement on Tuesday, following a signing and
handover ceremony held on June 21, 2025, at the National Museum in Lagos. This initiative
marks a significant step in celebrating and safeguarding Nigeria’s rich artistic legacy for
future generations.
The Coronation Gallery, set to open within the new NCMM Oba Ovonramwen Facility in
Benin City, will showcase 119 Benin Bronzes recently returned to Nigeria from the
Netherlands. This repatriation represents the largest return of these invaluable cultural
artifacts since they were looted during the British punitive expedition of 1897. The gallery will
serve as a significant center for preserving and celebrating Nigeria’s heritage, offering the
public a unique opportunity to view these historic treasures in their homeland for the first
time in over a century.
Scheduled for completion and public opening later this year, the gallery will offer a world-
class venue for conservation, education, and community engagement. Aigboje Aig-
Imoukhuede, CFR, Chairman of Coronation Group, described the return of the Benin
Bronzes as a profound restoration of history. He emphasized that it serves as a powerful
reminder of the dignity, creative brilliance, and skilled craftsmanship that have long
characterized the Nigerian people.
The Director-General of NCMM, Olugbile Holloway, commended Coronation Group for
aligning with their vision and offering vital support to the Commission. This collaboration
strengthens Coronation’s commitment to preserving and celebrating Nigeria’s cultural
heritage domestically. In addition to the gallery project, Coronation Group is partnering with
Tate to showcase Nigerian Modernism, the first UK exhibition tracing the evolution of
modern Nigerian art. These partnerships highlight Coronation’s expanding role in promoting
Nigerian art and history both locally and internationally, reinforcing its dedication to cultural
preservation and global awareness of Nigeria’s rich artistic legacy.s
