The Nigeria Union of Hawkers has urged both federal and state authorities to give priority to safeguarding the rights of hawkers and enhancing their working environments as the nation observed International Hawkers’ Day 2025.

During the 2025 Hawkers’ Day celebration themed “Empowering Street Entrepreneurs: Dignity, Rights, and Recognition,” National President of the NUH, Comrade Babalola, issued a call for stronger governmental backing.

Babalola highlighted the significant role hawkers play in the country’s economy, emphasizing their contribution and the need for official recognition.

“Hawking has empowered over 15 million Nigerians, mostly unemployed graduates and families. It has helped many escape poverty,” he stated. “It is time the government recognised hawking as a legitimate form of entrepreneurship and put policies in place to protect those involved in it.”

Despite hawking’s economic impact, the NUH leader pointed out the challenges hawkers face daily, including extortion, harassment, lack of formal recognition, and unsafe work settings.

“We pledge to continue the struggle against eviction, extortion, and exploitative policies. We call for inclusive development that uplifts every Nigerian, especially those in the informal sector,” he affirmed.

He also expressed concern over the increasing number of children engaged in hawking, labeling it as child labour that subjects minors to exploitation and risks.

Babalola further revealed that the union has begun building a comprehensive database of hawkers, complete with proper identification. They are also actively working to offer healthcare support, scholarships, and training programs to enhance the welfare and business success of their members.

“Our aim is to create a dignified and friendly trade environment. The regulatory guidelines we are developing will help deter child abuse and criminal activities while transforming the trade for societal good,” he added.

He showed appreciation to the governors of Cross River, Anambra, Niger, Borno, Kano, and Ebonyi states for their steadfast financial and moral support towards hawkers. He called on other state leaders to follow their example by partnering with the union to improve infrastructure and ensure the safety of hawkers.

International Hawkers’ Day, held annually on May 26, honors the vital contributions of hawkers to the informal economy and cultural fabric. This year marked the inaugural official recognition of the day in Nigeria.
