Real Madrid’s head coach, Carlo Ancelotti, expressed on Monday that Kylian Mbappe has the potential to establish himself as a legendary figure at the club, much like the iconic Cristiano Ronaldo.
During his childhood, Mbappe looked up to Ronaldo, and since making the switch from Paris Saint-Germain to Madrid last summer, he has already matched the Portuguese forward’s record of 33 goals in his debut season at the Santiago Bernabeu.
“What I wish for Mbappe is that he is capable of achieving what Ronaldo did at Real Madrid — and I think that he can do it,” Ancelotti stated in a press conference. “That means he will be a legend at Real Madrid, like Cristiano Ronaldo is.”
Ronaldo made the move to Madrid from Manchester United in 2009 and departed in 2018 as the club’s all-time leading scorer with an incredible tally of 450 goals. The veteran striker, now 40 and playing for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, netted 33 goals in 35 appearances during his first season with Los Blancos.
At 26, Mbappe recently found the net twice against Leganes in a La Liga encounter on Saturday, reaching Ronaldo’s milestone. Reflecting on the achievement, he described the moment as “very special” and acknowledged the significance of Ronaldo in Madrid’s history.
“We know what he means for Real Madrid and me, we speak, he gives me a lot of advice,” Mbappe revealed to Real Madrid TV.
With Madrid still competing in three different tournaments, the French forward has ample opportunities to extend his goal count before the season concludes.
Ancelotti’s men will face Real Sociedad on Tuesday in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final. Having secured a narrow 1-0 victory in the first leg at San Sebastian, they aim to capitalize on their advantage at home.
A triumph in the competition would see Ancelotti become the first manager in Madrid’s history to win the Copa del Rey three times.
“To be close to a final motivates me, it motivates the players, and it motivates the club,” the Italian coach remarked. “It’s an achievement to play in a final in any competition, so to be so close, to have a small advantage, and because we’ll have the support of our fans, obviously motivates us even more.”
