The Ondo State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the attack on members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Ogbese, Ondo State.
CSP Funmilayo Odunlami, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, confirmed the arrests on Tuesday through a statement made available to news outlets in Akure.
According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the attack occurred on Sunday, February 23, when NANS members were traveling to Abuja for their annual convention. The victims were assaulted in Ogbese, located in Akure North Local Government Area.
Odunlami explained that the police received an emergency call from one of the NANS members, who reported being attacked unprovoked by a group of youths in the Ogbese area. The police quickly responded to the distress call, restoring order and ensuring the safety of the victims.
A manhunt was launched immediately to apprehend those responsible for the attack. Odunlami revealed that intelligence gathered indicated that this was not the first time NANS members had been targeted in the same community.
Thanks to intelligence-led policing, a special squad within the command successfully arrested three suspects linked to the incident.
The Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, reassured NANS members that a thorough investigation would be conducted to uncover the full details of the attack and ensure that all involved would face justice.
Odunlami stated that the three suspects are currently undergoing interrogation and will be charged in court once the investigation is completed. She also urged the public to continue cooperating with the police, reporting any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.
In response, the NANS team, led by Comrade Owolewa Taiwo, Zonal Coordinator for the South-West, expressed gratitude to the police commissioner for their swift action and ongoing efforts to maintain security across the state. Taiwo also pledged NANS’ support in assisting the police to combat crime and criminal activities in Ondo State.
