The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company has announced that electricity consumers in the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding areas will start experiencing full power supply in the next 11 days. They stated that the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s ongoing restoration work on the underground transmission line, which vandals damaged near Millennium Park in Abuja, will be completed by February 23.

In a power supply update shared on its official X handle on Wednesday, the company mentioned that it received this assurance from the transmission company and requested understanding from affected residents. The update read, “Dear valued customers. We regret the ongoing power supply disruption affecting Wuye, Utako, Jabi, Mabushi, Katampe Districts, Life Camp, Wuse Zones 1-7, Wuse 2, Maitama, parts of the Central Business District, and nearby areas. This is due to the vandalization of the 132kV Katampe – Central Area underground transmission cable.

“The Transmission Company of Nigeria has assured us that restoration efforts are actively underway, with its engineers working tirelessly to replace and reconnect the damaged cable. TCN has committed to completing the work and restoring normal power supply to the Central Area Transmission Substation (AT5) by February 23, 2025. We understand the inconvenience this may cause you and sincerely appreciate your patience.”

“While repair work continues, load management will be implemented to optimize available supply. We remain in close collaboration with TCN to ensure a swift resolution and the full restoration of power to the affected areas.”

In the meantime, at least 188 locations within the FCT, operating under the AEDC, have experienced widespread power outages and blackouts due to various

technical faults affecting its feeders over the past two months. These disruptions have had a significant impact on power supply to many areas and businesses between January 1 and February 11, 2025.

This information was revealed through 26 public notices shared on the AEDC’s official X handle, which aimed to inform customers about the power outages and disruptions, as analyzed by our correspondent on Wednesday. The company indicated that these power cuts were caused by different technical issues on the feeder supplying these areas, despite generating revenue of N229.39bn for electricity usage in the first 11 months of 2024.

This amount is distinct from other disruptions related to maintenance work conducted by the TCN and the relocation of the 33KV DC Airport Feeder and 132KV Kukwaba-Apo Transmission Line Towers. A detailed breakdown showed that on January 4, 2025, the disco reported the first power outage of the year, affecting customers at the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and surrounding areas. The following day, on January 5, customers in Agwan Koro, Madalla, Police Estate, Efab Estate Dakwa, FHA Zuba, Dakwa, Anagada Tungamaje, and parts of DeiDei, Jiwa, and nearby areas experienced a power outage due to a technical fault on the feeder serving these locations.

Customers in Garki Area 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, and parts of Durumi Area 1, as well as locations like Diplomatic Drive, National Hospital, The Dome, Russian Embassy, Equatorial Guinea Embassy, UN, World Trade Center, ICPC, Church Gate, and surrounding areas experienced a lengthy power outage on January 6 due to a technical fault on the feeder supplying these areas.

Additionally, on January 18, customers in Bolingo Hotel, Cool FM, all of Kubwa, FCDA, Kubwa Extension III Army Scheme, Kubwa village, Papal Ground, parts of Karasana, Berger camp, Gado Nasko Road, and nearby areas also faced a power outage that impacted both businesses and residents. 

On January 30, 2025, the power supply was interrupted in Banex Plaza and its vicinity. The most recent incident took place on February 11, 2025, affecting consumers in Army Barracks, Water Works, Masuga Kontagora, and the surrounding areas.

The AEDC noted, “Our dedicated technical team is working tirelessly to restore power as quickly as possible.

“We regret any inconvenience this may cause and appeal for your patience.”
