NAFDAC Warns Nigerians About Circulating Fake Amoxycillin

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a critical alert concerning counterfeit Deekins Amoxycillin 500mg capsules, which are believed to be linked to severe health complications in users. The agency has flagged and recalled batch number 4C639001, which carries a manufacturing date of March 2024 and an expiry date of February 2027. Consumers are strongly advised to remain vigilant and discontinue the use of any capsules from this batch immediately.

During a media briefing in Abuja, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized the gravity of the matter, disclosing that it would be escalated to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Surveillance and Monitoring System for further action.

This measure stems from fears that the counterfeit capsules may have been distributed beyond Nigeria’s borders, potentially posing a global health risk.

Prof. Adeyeye revealed that the agency has already collected samples from the implicated batch for laboratory testing. To further address the issue, NAFDAC has summoned key industry stakeholders, including Quality Control and Production Managers, to provide detailed information. The investigation seeks to identify the source of the counterfeit drugs and mitigate any future threats to public safety.

“We are actively monitoring developments, and our scientific analysis is ongoing,” stated Prof. Adeyeye. “Meanwhile, the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, which oversees site licensing, has been informed, and the pharmacist responsible has also been notified.”

The Director-General reassured Nigerians of NAFDAC’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the quality and safety of medicines available in the country. She urged the public to stop using products from the identified batch and called on healthcare professionals to ensure that all medications are sourced from reliable and authorized suppliers to avoid exposure to counterfeit drugs.

NAFDAC remains steadfast in its efforts to thoroughly investigate the matter and collaborate with relevant bodies to protect public health and prevent future occurrences.
