An incident has occurred in Asaba, Delta State, where 17-year-old Samuel Onyeme, a senior secondary student was allegedly beaten and locked inside a dog cage for visiting his female classmate at her residence. The incident occurred on Sunday around 6 p.m. when Samuel went to see his friend after she invited him.
According to an eyewitness and Samuel’s mother, Mrs. Onyeme, the girl’s father and two brothers attacked Samuel with wooden planks. They then locked him inside a dog cage, collected his mobile phone, and denied his mother access to him for two hours.
Samuel’s mother described the incident as traumatic, stating that her daughter, Jessica, was also assaulted when she tried to seek help and re-enter the compound. The situation escalated when Samuel’s elder brother, Ben, contacted a family friend, who alerted a human rights organization. Police officers rescued Samuel around 10 p.m.
Human rights activist Victor Ojei condemned the act, calling it “barbaric and inhumane.” Ojei has petitioned the Delta State Commissioner of Police to investigate and prosecute the girl’s father and brothers for unlawful detention, assault, and attempted murder.
Samuel stayed for four hours in the dog cage and sustained multiple injuries, including psychological trauma. The petition also alleges threats to set Samuel ablaze, which constitutes attempted murder under Section 320 of the Criminal Code Act. Samuel is currently receiving treatment at Asaba hospital for his injuries.
