Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced on Wednesday the approval of a new N85,000 minimum wage for civil servants in the state. This marks the third time he has adjusted the salary structure since taking office in 2019.
In January 2023, Sanwo-Olu implemented a wage increase he had promised workers in September 2022. Another wage hike followed in January 2024, leading up to this latest announcement.
Speaking during a television interview about his administration’s efforts to ease the impact of fuel subsidy removal on workers, the governor emphasized that the decision was based on the state’s unique financial position and affordability.
Sanwo-Olu said. “This isn’t a competition It’s about what we can afford”. We recognize that living in Lagos comes with higher costs, and we increased wages earlier this year. I hope by January, we can raise the minimum wage to N100,000, not to outdo anyone, but to ensure our people have a decent standard of living.”
The new wage increase follows the federal government’s approval of a N70,000 minimum wage after discussions with labor unions.
He said: “I’m glad to let you know that the minimum wage for Lagos, which we have discussed with our union, is N85,000 today.”
