In a groundbreaking initiative to bolster its air surveillance capabilities, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the acquisition of a Cessna Grand Caravan EX-208B.
Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Mr. Bashir Adeniyi, inspected the newly acquired aircraft on Friday in Bartlesville, Washington, USA, marking a significant advancement for the NCS’s air operations.
As stated by Abdullahi Maiwada, the NCS National Public Relations Officer, the aircraft, registered as 5N-BAA, is set to enhance the agency’s air patrol and surveillance efforts.
Known for its rugged versatility and exceptional short-field takeoff and landing capabilities, the Cessna Grand Caravan is powered by the reliable PT6 Pratt and Whitney engine, making it ideally suited for Nigeria’s border security operations.
Adeniyi emphasized the acquisition’s importance, highlighting that the aircraft is equipped with a modern Garmin G1000 Avionics cockpit system, enabling effective operations in day, night, and low-visibility conditions.
“This aircraft will be a transformative asset for the Nigeria Customs Service’s air wing,” he remarked. “Its ability to carry 10 officers and sustain six hours of flight will significantly enhance our air surveillance and border patrol capacity.”
The aircraft is expected to play a crucial role in identifying smuggling routes, deploying armed personnel, and providing rapid support for ground operations.
Adeniyi further stated, “With this aircraft, we will strengthen our air border patrol capabilities, allowing us to intercept illegal activities and ensure swift extraction support when necessary.”
He noted that the aircraft’s mission aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.
Adeniyi also mentioned that the aircraft will serve as a strategic asset for Nigeria Customs Technical and Hangar Services Limited, providing logistical support and enhancing revenue generation for the agency.
He highlighted the cost-efficiency of the aircraft, stating that its operational expenses are relatively low compared to other models in its category.
“This is a long-term investment for the service,” he explained. “It not only boosts our operational efficiency but also contributes to the sustainability of our air surveillance initiatives.”
Capt. Kuhi Mbaya, Aircraft Operations Coordinator and Managing Director of Nigeria Customs Technical and Hangar Services, praised the acquisition as a significant milestone for the NCS’s aviation unit.
“With this aircraft, the Nigeria Customs Service is set to rejuvenate its air border patrol activities, enhancing our ability to secure borders and improve revenue generation for both the agency and the nation,” Mbaya stated.
The statement further indicated that the acquisition of the Cessna Grand Caravan is expected to provide the Nigeria Customs Service with considerable tactical advantages, tightening border security and signaling to economic saboteurs that the agency is now better equipped than ever to combat smuggling activities.
