Airfares Surged by 25.51% in August-NBS

In August 2024, the average cost of air travel surged dramatically, reaching N123,700.14 for single trips on designated routes. This marks a 25.51% rise from the N98,560.28 recorded in July 2024.

According to a report released on Tuesday by the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics, the fare also soared by 56.56% year-on-year, up from N79,011.38 in August 2023, making air travel increasingly costly for passengers.

In contrast, the average bus fare for city trips fell to N869.35 in August 2024, reflecting a 7.77% decrease from N942.61 in July 2024. On a yearly comparison, the fare plunged by 34.95% from N1,336.38 in August 2023. This drop may be tied to lower inflationary pressures on urban transportation services.

For intercity bus routes, fares edged up slightly by 0.59%, climbing to N7,159.00 in August 2024 from N7,117.17 in the prior month. Year-over-year, fares jumped 20.97%, increasing from N5,918.18 in August 2023, indicating higher operational costs for bus companies.

Meanwhile, passengers using motorcycles (commonly called Okada) experienced a fare rise as well. The average charge per ride in August 2024 stood at N524.22, reflecting an 8.46% increase from N483.33 in July. However, on an annual basis, Okada fares dropped by 18.87%, down from N646.12 in August 2023.

Waterway transport, commonly used in coastal regions, also saw an uptick in fares. The average price for waterway passenger transport rose to N1,449.34 in August 2024, a 3.30% increase from N1,402.95 in July. Comparing year-on-year, fares saw a modest rise of 3.03%, up from N1,406.74 in August 2023.

While certain transport fares have fallen, the sharp increases in air travel and intercity fares highlight ongoing inflationary pressures affecting long-distance travel options.
