The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has reinforced its dedication to improving tax compliance among Nigerian businesses by entering into a strategic alliance with the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI).

This partnership was spotlighted at the opening ceremony of the 19th Abuja International Trade Fair, themed ‘Mobility: Options for Transportation, Trade Finance, and Taxation,’ which took place in Abuja on Monday.

In his remarks at the event, FIRS Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, whose message was delivered by the Director of Taxpayers Services, Dr. Lovette Ononuga, commended the ACCI for its continuous efforts to foster trade and cooperation among entrepreneurs.

“This gathering consistently showcases the resilience and innovation of Nigerian business owners,” said Adedeji.

Furthermore, Adedeji highlighted that partnerships are essential for advancing tax advocacy and encouraging voluntary compliance. He noted that working with institutions like the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry is key to raising awareness about the importance of tax compliance in supporting the economy.

“Through this collaboration, we aim to cultivate a culture of tax compliance that not only strengthens the system but also contributes to creating a more stable and predictable business environment,” Ononuga added.

She also underscored the role of technology in simplifying tax processes, stating, “Automation has made tax compliance easier, enabling businesses to flourish while fulfilling their tax obligations.”

Ononuga reaffirmed FIRS’s commitment to a customer-focused approach, emphasizing efforts to equip tax officials with the skills required to serve the public efficiently.

Chief Emeka Obegolu, President of the ACCI, welcomed participants and lauded the trade fair as a crucial platform for fostering connections among businesses.

“The Abuja International Trade Fair has become a leading multi-sectoral event in Nigeria, offering local and international exhibitors the chance to introduce new products and gain insights into emerging industry trends,” Obegolu stated.

This year’s theme, “Mobility: Options for Transportation, Trade Finance, and Taxation,” was central to the discussions, highlighting key drivers of economic development.

Obegolu emphasized, “Effective transportation solutions help businesses overcome logistical hurdles, streamline their supply chains, and minimize operational costs.”

Dele Oye, National President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA), also commended the partnership. He stressed the importance of implementing sound policies that create a favorable business climate.

He remarked, “The value of efficient transport networks, accessible trade financing, and equitable tax policies cannot be overstated as we work towards positioning Nigeria as a leader in both regional and global trade.”
