Phase 1 of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit, also known as the Metro Rail, officially began operations on May 29, 2024, following its inauguration by President Bola Tinubu. Since then, the rail service has transported over 250,000 passengers in just over 100 day.
John Zhao, an official of the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC), the firm responsible for constructing and managing the first phase of the rail lines, shared this update on his X handle on Friday.
It is worth noting that President Tinubu had earlier extended the free train rides on the Abuja Rail Mass Transit for an additional six months until the end of the year, after a prior announcement by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, which initially granted commuters two months of free rides on the metro rail.
According to the CCECC representative, the rail system operates on two lines spanning 45 kilometers and featuring 12 stations. Since its commercial launch, the system has maintained a safe operational record and reaches a top speed of 100 km/h.
The rail network connects key areas, including the city center, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, and the Kubwa satellite town, which has helped ease traffic congestion across the city.
“Phase 1 of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit by #CCECC has been running safely for over 100 days! The two-line system covers a total of 45 km with 12 stations, and trains can travel up to 100 km/h. The rail line links the heart of Abuja, the international airport, and Kubwa satellite town. Over 250,000 passengers have been transported so far, significantly reducing traffic jams in the capital. Take a look,” Zhao’s post highlighted.
