The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has called off its seven-day nationwide warning strike and directed its members to resume work today, Monday, September 2, 2024.
The strike, which began last Monday, was embarked upon to press for the rescue of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, who was kidnapped eight months ago.
Although the Federal Government threatened to invoke the “no work, no pay” policy, NARD remained unmoved. However, after a slight improvement in engagement from the government, the association has decided to suspend the strike.
NARD President, Dr. Dele Abdullahi, stated that the association would review the government’s commitment to resolving their demands in the next three weeks. He expressed hope that the government would sustain its current efforts to address their concerns.
Dr. Popoola, who was abducted along with her husband and nephew on December 27, 2023, remains in captivity, along with her nephew, while her husband was released in March.
