NCC Sets Final Deadline for SIM-NIN Linkage

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced September 14, 2024, as the final deadline for all Nigerians to link their Subscriber Identity Modules (SIMs) to their National Identity Numbers (NINs).

In a statement released yesterday, the NCC revealed that over 153 million SIMs have been successfully linked to NINs, representing a 96% compliance rate. This significant progress follows the Federal Government’s 2020 policy to link all SIMs to NINs.

The Commission emphasized that complete linkage is crucial for enhancing trust and security in the digital economy, reducing fraud and cybercrime, and promoting financial inclusion and economic growth.

“The complete linkage of all SIM cards to NINs is essential for our digital economy’s security and growth,” said the NCC. “We urge all Nigerians to complete their NIN-SIM linkage before the deadline.”

The NCC has directed Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to complete mandatory verification and linkage by September 14, 2024. From September 15, 2024, no SIM will be allowed to operate without a valid NIN.

The Commission also warned that the sale and purchase of pre-registered SIMs are criminal offenses punishable by imprisonment and fines. Citizens are encouraged to report any such activities to the NCC via their toll-free line (622) or social media platforms.

The NCC’s decision comes as part of efforts to enhance national security and protect citizens’ data. With the deadline fast approaching, Nigerians are advised to link their SIMs to their NINs to avoid any disruptions to their mobile services.
