Tigran Gambaryan’s family has disclosed that the Binance executive, who has been held in Nigeria on money laundering charges, is now unable to walk due to intense pain from a herniated disc.
Gambaryan, detained for six months, reportedly lacks adequate medical treatment while in custody, prompting his family to request his release on humanitarian grounds.
It was earlier reported that the Nigerian government accused Gambaryan and fellow executive Nadeem Anjarwalla of attempting to obscure the source of $35.4 million linked to illicit activities in Nigeria.
On July 30, 2024, a bench warrant was issued for Abraham Ehizojie, a doctor at Kuje Correctional Centre, for not providing Gambaryan’s medical records or appearing in court. This action followed Gambaryan’s lawyer raising concerns about his deteriorating health, noting he had appeared in court using a wheelchair.
EFCC representative Ekene Iheanacho informed the judge of the need for the medical officer to address the detainee’s health issues. The statement from Gambaryan’s family highlighted that he is now bedridden, suffering from severe pain, and taking blood thinners to prevent clots.
They also mentioned that the U.S. Embassy has lost access to Gambaryan, who is unable to use a wheelchair or reach the visitor area.
Despite the court’s recess, Gambaryan’s case has been scheduled for a hearing on September 2, 2024, as Justice Nwite’s court remains operational. Tigran’s wife, Yuki, has urged the government to release her husband, emphasizing the distressing state of his health and their family’s suffering.
She has made a heartfelt appeal to both the U.S. and Nigerian governments, stressing that the extended detention without proper care is intolerable.
