Guaranty Trust Bank Plc has announced an attempted compromise of its website domain. The incident occurred on Wednesday, just a day after the bank renewed its domain registration, resulting in a brief disruption of its online services. This temporary issue led to widespread alarm and media speculation about potential cloning of the bank’s website and possible risks to customer data.
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the bank’s management, GTBank assured that the breach attempt had failed and no cloning had occurred. The bank emphasized that customer data was not at risk, as it does not store any such information on its website.
The statement titled, “Alleged Web Domain Hack: the statement addressed claims that hackers had seized and cloned the bank’s website and accessed customer data. GTBank clarified that these reports were incorrect, stating that their website had not been cloned and no customer information had been compromised.
The bank also reported that its Information Security team is actively working to restore the domain settings. GTBank reaffirmed its commitment to data security and encouraged customers to remain assured in the bank’s protective measures.
“Our dedicated team is working diligently to resolve the situation, and the website will be fully operational soon,” the statement noted. “We urge customers to disregard inaccurate media reports and continue to trust in our steadfast commitment to safeguarding their data. Thank you for your continued support.”
