The Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) has started installing sophisticated Smart Light Emitting Diode lights along Airport Road in Abuja. The goal of the upgrade is to bring the larger FCT vision to reality, which will support the current infrastructure development.
In a statement released on Sunday, Felix Obuah, the coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, stated that plans are underway to convert all main highways and streets in Abuja to smart LED lighting.
He said that the contract would be handled bit by bit and that it had already been assigned. “We are ready to light up Abuja,” he said.
Last week, Obuah threatened to blacklist streetlight contractors who did not live up to norms, criticizing their attitude.
But in a statement released on Sunday, Mrs. Ronke Ozoh, Executive Director of Tejaff Multi-Concept Limited, stated that the project’s managing business, Concrete Thinking Limited, has just started the update.
According to her, thousands of Smart LED units will be installed to give the FCT’s Central Area and Airport Road areas the appropriate appearance of a smart city.
When Ozoh visited the location last week, he saw that the upkeep and operation costs of streetlight infrastructure might be lowered by as much as 60% with LED lighting.
The intelligent aspect of this streetlighting system allows for remote administration of streetlight assets and provides improved lighting, she continued, citing smart LED streetlight systems as one of the technologies that enable smart cities.
“The intelligent smart LED can give the exact amount of energy consumed. It can also be detected from a central control unit if any of the bulbs is faulty. It will also help inaccurate energy consumption bills from electricity companies,” she said.
Lennox Adigwe, an Abuja resident, was also cited in the statement as pleading with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, to expand it to other areas of the country’s capital.
According to him, the project would guarantee the protection of individuals’ lives and property in addition to creating the infrastructure for street lighting that will boost the FCT’s aesthetics and night economy. It would also provide jobs for thousands of people.
