Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s cabinet reshuffle has sparked criticism from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The PDP accused AbdulRazaq of running a “one-man government” and sidelining his cabinet, contrary to his claims of promoting teamwork and inclusivity.
During the swearing-in ceremony of two new commissioners, AbdulRazaq emphasized the importance of collaboration in governance. However, the PDP Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Adewara, alleged that the governor’s statements were mere rhetoric, and that commissioners were mere figureheads with no meaningful input in decision-making.
The PDP also criticized AbdulRazaq’s governance style, citing the lack of regular State Executive Council meetings since 2019. Adewara claimed that decisions were often made unilaterally by the governor and rubber-stamped by commissioners.
Furthermore, the PDP challenged AbdulRazaq’s claims of progress in various sectors, including healthcare and social investments. They cited the state’s poor performance in primary healthcare, despite heavy investment, and alleged corruption in the energy sector.
The cabinet reshuffle, which saw the inauguration of Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe and Dr. Maryam Nnafatima Imam as commissioners, has been seen as a move to reinvigorate the administration. However, the PDP’s criticism highlights the ongoing tensions between the ruling party and the opposition in Kwara State.
