Nigeria’s crude oil production declined to 1.324 million barrels per day (mbpd) in September, as reported by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) on Monday. According to OPEC’s October Monthly Oil Market Report, Nigeria’s output dropped from 1.352 mbpd in August to 1.324 mbpd in September.
This reduction, OPEC noted, shows a daily average loss of 27,000 barrels, based on data provided by the Federal Government. Meanwhile, the government has continued efforts to boost production to a target of two million bpd.
In July, Nigeria’s production stood at 1.307 mbpd, then rose to 1.352 mbpd in August, raising expectations among industry stakeholders for a sustained increase.
However, the recent decline presents a challenge to that optimism. Based on secondary sources, OPEC revealed that Nigeria’s production fell from 1.438 mbpd to 1.405 mbpd last month.
OPEC also stated, “Secondary sources indicate that total OPEC-12 crude production averaged 26.04 mb/d in September 2024, marking a 604,000 b/d decrease from the previous month. While crude output increased in IR Iran and Kuwait, production in Libya, Iraq, Nigeria, and Saudi Arabia saw a decline.”
Meanwhile, crude oil production from non-OPEC countries averaged 14.06 mb/d in September 2024, showing a 47,000 b/d increase month-on-month.
