The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has raised the pump price of petrol from ₦568 to ₦897 per litre, amidst ongoing fuel scarcity and crisis in the country. This price adjustment was confirmed by correspondents in Abuja and Lagos on Tuesday.
While the Abuja report indicated a price increase to ₦897 per litre, the Lagos report stated that the NNPCL station on Awolowo Road increased the price to ₦855 per litre. Following NNPCL’s price adjustment, other marketers have also increased their prices by over 30%, reaching around ₦897 per litre.
The ex-depot price of petrol was previously hiked to ₦754 per litre, reportedly to reflect global prices and reduce NNPCL’s debt burden. However, NNPCL spokesperson Femi Soneye denied any price adjustments, stating that the old price remains in effect.
Earlier, the Federal Government also denied reports that it directed NNPCL to set fuel prices at ₦1,000. In a statement, Special Adviser Nnemaka Okafor emphasized that the Minister of Petroleum Resources did not issue such a directive, calling the claims “outright falsehoods” circulating on social media.
