The Katsina State Police Command has begun implementing a government-mandated 24-hour curfew in Dutsinma Local Government Area and a 7pm to 7am curfew across the remaining 33 local government areas of the state.

In a statement released on Friday, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Sadiq, stated that these actions were necessary due to the nationwide protests that started on Thursday and turned violent in several parts of the state.

“The 24-hour curfew in Dutsinma Local Government Area is crucial for ensuring public safety and preventing further escalation of violence, vandalism, and looting of public and private properties. The 7pm to 7am curfew in the rest of the state is designed to deter nocturnal criminal activities and maintain law and order throughout the state,” Sadiq said.

Sadiq reported that there were no fatalities during Thursday’s protest, but police had detained about 50 individuals involved in the destruction and looting of government and public property.

He added, “We advise parents and guardians to warn their children and wards against engaging in unlawful activities, such as violent protests, vandalism, and looting. We also urge youths to exercise restraint and avoid being used as instruments of violence.

“The police, in collaboration with other security agencies, will conduct regular patrols to ensure full compliance with the curfew. Those found violating the curfew will face strict penalties.

“We appeal to the public to cooperate with security personnel and remain indoors during the curfew hours. Let us work together to maintain peace and order in our state.”
