Court Overturns Law Reinstating Emir Sanusi

A Federal High Court in Kano has overturned the Kano Emirate Council Law used to depose Ado Bayero and other emirs. On Thursday, June 20, Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman invalidated the actions of the Kano State Government, ordering all parties to maintain their positions.

Justice Liman criticized the procedures taken by the Kano State Government to nullify the Kano Emirates Council Law. The Kano House of Assembly had previously annulled the law, which was subsequently enforced by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, resulting in Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero’s removal as Emir of Kano.

Governor Yusuf also reversed the establishment of four emirates—Bichi, Rano, Karaye, and Gaya—created by his predecessor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. This law had also been used to reinstate Muhammadu Sanusi II, who was dethroned by Ganduje in 2020, as the 16th Emir of Kano.

However, Aminu Babba Danagundi, a former kingmaker in the Kano emirate and the Sarkin Dawaki Babba, disputed the law. Represented by his lawyer, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), Danagundi sought a court declaration to render the law invalid.
