Prominent Muslim cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has expressed optimism that former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, could experience a change in his present circumstances after Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, suggesting that developments following the polls may create an opportunity for his freedom.
Gumi made the disclosure during an appearance on PAPShow on Thursday, October 29, 2026, where he discussed El-Rufai’s current predicament, his political standing and the personal connection they have maintained over the years.
While commenting on the former governor’s situation, the Islamic scholar admitted that El-Rufai had made some wrong decisions in the past. However, he indicated that the unfolding political situation could take a different turn once Nigerians conclude the next general elections.
The cleric expressed confidence that the period after the 2027 polls could introduce a new phase in the former governor’s circumstances, potentially creating an opportunity for his release.
Speaking during the programme, Gumi said: “El-Rufai has made mistakes, and after the election, a new chapter will be opened for his release.”
His remarks have drawn attention to the possibility of political developments influencing the former governor’s situation after the forthcoming electoral exercise.
Although Gumi appeared hopeful about a possible resolution, he did not identify any particular individual, institution or political arrangement that could facilitate such an outcome.
He also failed to explain whether his prediction was based on ongoing discussions, political calculations or his personal expectations concerning the country’s leadership after the 2027 elections.
Nevertheless, the cleric’s intervention has generated renewed interest in El-Rufai’s circumstances, especially given their longstanding association and the history of their relationship.
Gumi and the former Kaduna governor have known each other for several years, maintaining a relationship that began before El-Rufai established himself as a major figure in Nigeria’s political arena.
The Islamic scholar previously revealed that they were friends and former schoolmates at the School of Basic Studies, an association that has continued to attract attention whenever he speaks publicly about the former governor.
His latest comments have therefore been viewed against the background of their personal relationship, with Gumi once again making his position on El-Rufai’s situation known.
The cleric’s intervention also comes at a time when political activities are gradually gathering momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, with attention increasingly focused on influential politicians and developments that could shape the country’s political direction.
His prediction about a possible change after the polls has added to conversations surrounding El-Rufai, particularly among individuals following his political journey and current challenges.
El-Rufai governed Kaduna State for eight years, serving two consecutive terms between 2015 and 2023. Before leaving office, he was regarded as one of the prominent figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC), having played significant roles in Nigerian political affairs.
Since completing his tenure, the former governor has remained an influential personality in national political discussions, with his public statements, political decisions and dealings with other prominent figures frequently attracting attention.
Gumi’s latest remarks have further brought his situation into the spotlight, particularly his suggestion that the period following the 2027 elections could mark a turning point.
However, the cleric offered no concrete explanation of the events that might produce the anticipated development, leaving questions about the possible circumstances surrounding El-Rufai’s eventual release unanswered.
For now, Gumi’s statement remains an expression of his expectations about what could happen after the next general elections rather than confirmation of any established arrangement for the former governor’s freedom.
