2027: Peter Obi Explains Decision to Sign Electoral Peace Accord

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has explained his decision to sign the National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi said he signed the agreement because political leaders seeking public office should conduct themselves in a manner worthy of the positions they aspire to occupy.

The former Anambra State governor made the remarks after major presidential candidates and political party leaders signed the first National Peace Accord in Abuja ahead of the 2027 elections.

Obi questioned the need for politicians to be reminded to behave responsibly, arguing that candidates seeking to lead the country should naturally demonstrate good conduct and respect for peace.

He stressed that signing the accord should not merely be a ceremonial exercise, but should translate into responsible behaviour throughout the electoral process.

The NDC candidate also maintained that political leaders have a responsibility to set a good example for citizens, particularly during election campaigns when tensions can rise.

The peace accord commits political actors to peaceful, issue-based campaigns and respect for the integrity of the electoral process.

Obi’s position comes as political parties and presidential contenders intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with campaigns officially entering a new phase.

He has also urged Nigerians to reject politicians who violate the terms of the peace agreement, saying voters should hold candidates accountable for their conduct during the election period.

The signing ceremony was attended by several major political figures, including Obi and other presidential contenders. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was represented at the event by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

The development has renewed calls for peaceful political engagement as parties begin their campaigns and mobilise supporters ahead of the 2027 elections.
