Kidnap Trial: Defence Closes Case, Raises Concern Over Missing Witnesses

The trial of three suspected kidnappers before the Edo State Special Criminal Court took a new turn after the defendants closed their case, with defence counsel expressing concern over the absence of key witnesses expected to testify during the proceedings.

Counsel to the defendants, Barrister Amaechi Achi Onwuzor, argued that the failure of some witnesses to appear in court had affected the conduct of the trial. He maintained that the absence of the witnesses denied the defence an opportunity to properly challenge aspects of the prosecution’s case through cross-examination.

The three suspects are standing trial over the alleged abduction of a woman at the Vegetable Market along Airport Road in Benin City. They face multiple charges, including kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism and unlawful possession of firearms, allegations they have denied.

During the proceedings, the defence informed the court that it would not be calling additional witnesses and formally closed its case. Counsel subsequently urged the court to consider the evidence presented and deliver judgment in accordance with the law.

The prosecution had earlier concluded its case after presenting witnesses and documentary evidence, including statements made during investigations. The trial has attracted public attention due to growing concerns over kidnapping and other violent crimes in Edo State.

Justice Aigbona Terry Momodu adjourned the matter to a later date for the adoption of final written addresses by both the prosecution and the defence before judgment is delivered.

The Edo State Government has continued to strengthen efforts to combat kidnapping through the establishment of special courts dedicated to handling kidnapping and cult-related offences. Authorities say the initiative is aimed at ensuring speedy trials and improving the administration of criminal justice.

Legal experts note that the conclusion of the defence’s case marks a significant stage in the trial, as the court will now consider the submissions of both parties before reaching a verdict. They also emphasise that every defendant remains presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.

The outcome of the case is expected to contribute to ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies and the judiciary to address kidnapping and related crimes, while reinforcing public confidence in the justice system.
