The Edo State Police Command has announced a temporary restriction on movement across the state ahead of the local government elections scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 11, 2026.
The police said the measure was introduced as part of security arrangements aimed at ensuring a peaceful, orderly and credible electoral process across the 18 local government areas of the state.
According to the command, the restriction will affect both vehicular and human movement during the specified period. The police explained that the decision was necessary to allow security personnel to effectively monitor activities, protect election officials, safeguard electoral materials and prevent possible disruptions during the exercise.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Command, Eno Ikoedem, announced the directive in a statement, noting that the restriction would take effect from midnight until 6:00 p.m. on election day.
However, the command stated that certain categories of individuals would be exempted from the restriction. These include accredited officials of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC), authorised election observers, recognised media personnel, security officers on election duties, emergency responders and other essential service providers.
The police further disclosed that security personnel had been deployed across the state to enforce compliance with the directive and maintain peace before, during and after the elections. The deployment is also expected to protect voters, electoral officials and sensitive election materials.
The command warned residents against violating the movement restriction or engaging in activities capable of disrupting the electoral process. It stated that individuals found breaching the directive would face appropriate legal action.
The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Monday Agbonika, assured residents that adequate security measures had been put in place to support a peaceful election. He encouraged voters, political parties and candidates to conduct themselves responsibly and follow guidelines issued by electoral authorities.
The announcement comes as political parties and candidates make final preparations for the local government elections. Stakeholders have continued to call for peaceful participation and respect for democratic procedures to ensure a smooth electoral exercise.
Political analysts say security arrangements remain a major factor in determining the success of elections, especially at the local government level where close community relationships can sometimes increase political tension. They stressed the importance of neutrality and professionalism from security agencies throughout the process.
Civil society groups and election observers have also consistently encouraged citizens to participate peacefully while urging authorities to protect voters’ rights and ensure that the election environment remains free and secure.
As Edo State prepares for the polls, attention is expected to focus on voter turnout, the conduct of political parties and the ability of relevant institutions to deliver a credible and peaceful electoral process.
The police command has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting a secure environment where residents can exercise their civic responsibilities without fear or interference.
