The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Taraba State has expressed concern over alleged attempts to use government agencies to intimidate opposition figures ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The candidate raised the concern while alleging that some institutions of government could be used to mount pressure on political opponents. He called on relevant authorities to ensure that security and anti-corruption agencies operate independently and professionally in accordance with the law.
According to him, democracy can only thrive when all political actors are allowed to participate freely without fear of intimidation or harassment. He urged government institutions to maintain neutrality and avoid actions that could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
The allegations come as political activities continue to increase across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections. Political parties and their candidates have begun strengthening their structures, mobilising supporters and preparing for future electoral contests.
The PDP candidate stated that the credibility of elections depends largely on creating a fair environment where all parties can campaign and engage with citizens without restrictions. He appealed to stakeholders to promote peaceful political participation and respect the rights of opposition groups.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which is responsible for investigating financial crimes, has previously faced public debates over allegations of selective enforcement. However, the commission has consistently maintained that its activities are guided by legal procedures and are not influenced by political interests.
Political analysts note that allegations of intimidation involving security agencies often emerge during election periods when competition among political parties becomes intense. They emphasise that the independence and professionalism of government institutions are important factors in maintaining trust in Nigeria’s democratic system.
In Taraba State, political activities are gradually gaining momentum as parties begin preparations for the 2027 governorship election. The PDP remains one of the major political parties in the state, while other parties are also working to expand their influence among voters.
The concerns raised by the PDP candidate have contributed to broader national discussions about political freedom, opposition rights and the role of government agencies during election seasons. Civil society organisations and political observers have repeatedly called for equal treatment of all political actors.
They have also stressed the importance of ensuring that law enforcement agencies remain focused on their constitutional responsibilities while avoiding actions that could be perceived as political interference.
As preparations for the 2027 elections continue, stakeholders are expected to pay closer attention to issues surrounding electoral fairness, security and political participation. Observers believe that addressing concerns raised by political parties will be essential to building confidence in the democratic process.
For now, the allegations remain part of ongoing political discussions, with many Nigerians awaiting further reactions from relevant authorities and other stakeholders.
