Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State have warned against the imposition of candidates for National Assembly positions ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging the party leadership to ensure a transparent and democratic selection process.
The party stakeholders made their position known during a meeting held to discuss preparations for the next election cycle. They stressed that allowing party members to freely choose their candidates through credible primaries would strengthen internal democracy and promote unity within the party.
According to the leaders, imposing candidates could create discontent among party members and negatively affect the APC’s chances in future elections. They argued that aspirants who have worked diligently for the growth of the party should be given a fair opportunity to contest for elective positions without interference.
The stakeholders also called on the national and state leadership of the APC to remain neutral during the candidate selection process. They maintained that fairness and transparency are essential for maintaining confidence among party members and preventing avoidable disputes.
Several party members at the meeting reportedly expressed concerns over rumours of attempts by influential individuals to determine who would emerge as candidates for National Assembly seats. They warned that such actions could undermine the democratic principles upon which the party is built.
The leaders further urged party members to remain united and committed to the APC’s objectives despite growing political activities ahead of the 2027 elections. They emphasized the importance of dialogue, consultation, and respect for party rules in resolving disagreements.
Political observers note that debates over candidate selection are common as elections approach, with many party members advocating for open and competitive primaries. Analysts believe that transparent internal processes can help political parties avoid divisions and improve their chances at the polls.
The warning from Kogi APC leaders comes as political parties across Nigeria begin early consultations and strategic planning ahead of the next general elections. Many stakeholders believe that how parties manage their internal affairs in the coming months will play a significant role in shaping future electoral outcomes.
As preparations for 2027 continue, party leaders in Kogi have reiterated their commitment to supporting any process that promotes fairness, inclusiveness, and the collective interest of the APC. They expressed hope that the party would uphold democratic values and provide a level playing field for all aspirants seeking elective positions.
