The Nenadi Usman-led Labour Party has announced the postponement of its scheduled congresses and national convention, which were earlier set to begin on Thursday, March 26, 2026.

According to the party’s initial timetable, ward congresses were to hold on March 26, followed by local government congresses on March 28, state congresses on March 31, and the national convention on April 11, 2026. However, after a joint stakeholders’ meeting involving members of the Interim National Working Committee (NWC) and representatives of labour unions, the party resolved to shift the exercise.

The decision, as stated by the Senior Special Adviser (Media), Ken Asogwa, is aimed at giving members and prospective entrants sufficient time to participate fully in the ongoing membership re-registration process.

As part of preparations to ensure a smooth and credible exercise, the party has also inaugurated a 45-member Congresses and Convention Committee. The committee is chaired by Ginger Onwusibe, who represents Isiala Ngwa South/Isiala Ngwa North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Other members of the committee include Salisu N. Mohammed, Obinna Aguocha, Amaobi Ogah, Ibe Okwara, Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, Alozie Munachim Ikechi, Benedict Etanabene, Emmanuel Emeruwa, Lawson Osagie, and Mrs. Imaobong Ufot, among others.

While inaugurating the committee, Usman charged members to carry out their responsibilities with diligence, impartiality, and commitment. She urged them to use the postponement period to complete all necessary preparations to ensure hitch-free congresses and convention.

The party also appealed to its members, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and supporters nationwide for their understanding, assuring that a new timetable would be announced in due course.

Meanwhile, the opposition party disclosed that it has zoned its presidential ticket to the South. Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting with INEC, Usman stated that the party would not field any aspirant from Northern Nigeria.

“We have taken a firm decision that we will not field any candidate from Northern Nigeria. The presidential ticket has been zoned to the South. Therefore, any northerner seeking to contest will not be considered,” she said.

She further emphasized that the party would adhere strictly to internal democratic processes but declined to name any potential candidate.
